The current ad campaign for Credit One Bank attempts to leverage Shaquille (Shaq) O’Neal’s basketball success and down-to-earth persona to build consumer trust. However, the “Shaq, Your Friend With Benefits” ad campaign crosses the line by using an inappropriate sexual innuendo.
Credit One Bank’s commercial mocks marital commitment when a wife expresses the news to her husband - “Honey, I have a friend with benefits.”
The husband is initially confused but shifts his mindset when he learns that Shaq is the friend.
Shaq makes the offer more appealing when he explains the 5% cash back rewards on gas, groceries, and internet when using the Credit One Bank Platinum X5 Visa Signature credit card.
Shaq’s convincing nature seals the deal, and the husband agrees this “friends with benefits” idea is an asset to his marriage.
Marital fidelity is not a punchline. Using a trusted spokesperson to joke about inappropriate relationships is irresponsible and offensive. It is extremely destructive and damaging to broadcast these crude adult themes during hours when impressionable children are watching.
Credit One Bank has deliberately chosen controversy over wholesome, family-friendly marketing. One Million Moms finds this highly inappropriate and entirely unnecessary.
Let Credit One Bank know that, as a parent and a consumer, you are disgusted by its recent irresponsible marketing choices. Credit One Bank needs to know that parents disapprove!
If you agree this marketing campaign is inappropriate, please sign our petition urging Credit One Bank to no longer produce commercials that contain sexual innuendo and to please pull the “Shaq, Your Friend With Benefits” ad off the air immediately.
