A birthday is more than a date on a calendar; it is an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and give a meaningful gift. The best birthday presents are not random or superficial. They are thoughtfully chosen, rooted in understanding, and offered with genuine care. As we consider America’s 250th birthday, we have a rare opportunity to consider what kind of gift truly fits our homeland.

What might we give to a nation that already has so much?

For America’s quarter-millennium celebration, I believe that the needed gift is not rooted in wealth or political policies. The right “birthday present” today is something far more enduring. What America actually needs is a spiritual awakening.

The need for revival

From America’s earliest days, discerning citizens knew this nation had a unique purpose under God. Throughout history, there have been seasons when that spiritual foundation was renewed and strengthened – times referred to as the Great Awakenings. These were not merely emotional movements, but profound touches from God in the hearts of individuals that spilled over into families, communities, and institutions. Lives were changed, priorities were reordered, and a renewed sense of moral clarity took root.

Looking now across the cultural and social landscape, it is impossible not to see the signs of spiritual bankruptcy. Division and a loss of shared morals mark our national experience. Many grope for solutions in policies or external initiatives, but history documents that the only lasting transformation begins within the human heart. This is why personal repentance, masses of people turning to Christ, and a pervasive spiritual awakening are the most fitting and needed gifts for America, 250 years in.

“There has never been a country in the history of the world that lasted and improved itself except by a religious and spiritual revival,” said the late evangelist Billy Graham.

A revival cannot be manufactured or bought. It cannot be legislated or engineered. It is a movement of God’s Holy Spirit, stirring people toward truth, humility, and a restored focus on Jesus. While it cannot be forced … it can be sought. Believers play a key role in preparing the ground for such a movement.

Theologian Charles Spurgeon once said, “Revival begins by Christians getting right first and then spills over into the world.”

The first step

Prayer is the starting point. When individuals and communities intentionally seek God, asking for revival, guidance, and mercy, this opens the door for a spiritual awakening. Prayer unites hearts to God’s purposes and reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. Corporate prayer for the nation becomes a personal and collective act of hope.

“The true believer can no more live without prayer, than without food day to day,” said George Whitefield, the 18th-century evangelist who is credited with sparking the first Great Awakening alongside Jonathan Edwards. Whitefield was also friends with Founding Father Benjamin Franklin; though they differed in their religious beliefs, the two shared a mutual respect.

The effects

Beyond prayer, a great birthday gesture for America would be to invite neighbors, friends, and others – even strangers – to attend worship services. So many today feel isolated and lonely, and these invitations are bridges that bring people together under the love of God and the message of the gospel.

Equally important is personal recommitment. A national awakening begins with individual decisions. Choosing to pursue God with intentionality and to live with integrity, compassion, gentleness, and faith sets an example that ripples outwardly. When individuals change, families change. When families change, communities follow.

It is easy to feel that one person’s efforts are too small to matter in the face of a nation’s challenges. But history tells a different story. Every significant movement began with some individual who decided to pray, act, and believe that God intervenes.

For example, from 1739-1740, Whitefield began preaching up and down the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States of America. He traveled over 5,000 miles and preached 350 sermons, reaching all 13 colonies. His passion and energy were contagious, and his simple act of obedience set the spiritual course for the birth of a nation.

This is evidence that a spiritual awakening is the accumulated result of many faithful steps taken by ordinary people.

The future

Commemorating 250 years of America is not just about celebrating; it is about intentional giving. We’ve all been to birthday gatherings where vacuous, unneeded gifts cluttered the table. Cake was cut and sentiments shared. Before the drive home was completed, the observance was largely forgotten. But at this birthday, for our home, America – this nation under God – we can all pitch in for something better than fading material gifts.

This gift cannot be purchased – only pursued. It begins today, with each of us. And it begins by opening our hearts, crying out in prayer, and appealing to God for national revival.
