In this episode of By Design, Abraham and Maria Hamilton tackle something most marriage conversations completely skip over: the idea of having a family mission. It sounds simple, but as they unpack it, you start to realize just how much this one thing can change the way a family operates.
They open with Matthew 19, where Jesus lays out the foundational design for marriage. It's a familiar passage, but Abraham and Maria use it as a launching pad to ask a bigger question: if God designed marriage with intention, shouldn't our families reflect that same intentionality? They make the case that just like an athlete locked in on a goal or a soldier focused on the mission, families thrive when everyone is moving in the same direction.
A big part of the episode centers on Deuteronomy 6, the Shema, where God calls His people to love Him wholeheartedly and pass that love on to their children. For the Hamiltons, this scripture isn't just a memory verse. It's the heartbeat of their family mission, shaping everything from how they handle finances to what activities their kids are involved in.
Maria gets refreshingly honest about the challenges wives face when their husbands don't have a clear sense of direction. She points out that submission is a lot easier when there's actually something worth following.
They also share personal stories about what it looks like to be "poured out" in service to God as a family, and how that posture has deepened their marriage and built something meaningful for their kids to inherit. It's not a perfect picture, but it's a real one.
Whether you're married, single, or somewhere in between, this episode is a good reminder that it's never too late to ask God what He's called your family to be. When your mission is rooted in His design, everything else starts to fall into place.
