With God on Your Side

God is big … bigger than we can imagine.

King David’s burst of praise from 1 Chronicles 29 helps us grasp the magnitude of this “only true God”:

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone” (1 Chronicles 29:11-12).

This prayer came from an earthly king whose heart was captured by that greater King, the One who is sovereign over all. Israel’s hope then and our hope now rests in “the living God” (Daniel 6:26), whom David described as adorned with majesty, power, glory, and victory.

Reverend A. W. Tozer (1897-1963) pastored Southside Alliance Church in Chicago for just over three decades. He spent the last few years of his life serving in Toronto at Avenue Road Church.

The minister was best known as an author. You probably have heard of his devotional classics, The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. (If not, I highly recommend them both.) Tozer was famous for communicating lofty things about God and detailed observations worth pondering.

The All-Knowing God

Consider what he wrote about the omniscience of God in The Knowledge of the Holy:

“Because God knows all things perfectly, He knows no thing better than any other thing, but all things equally well. He never discovers anything. He is never surprised, never amazed. He never wonders about anything nor … does He seek information or ask questions.

"God is self-existent and self-contained and knows what no creature can ever know—Himself, perfectly. ‘The things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.’ Only the Infinite can know the infinite.”

Tozer helps us to understand that God is so much bigger than we can imagine.

The All-Powerful God

Geoffrey Kirkland, a contemporary pastor from St. Louis, offers these astonishing thoughts about God, specifically the power of God:

“To be the sovereign King over all, the Lord must have power. And this He does! He is all powerful. Every ocean wave comes and goes at His direct decree. Every star remains in its place at His perfect command. Every person lives and moves and dies in God’s unchanging plan. Every molecule in all of existence is owned, formed, carried, and directed by the active power of God.”

This Only One is truly bigger than our little minds can comprehend.

If you, like David, claim this God as yours, then these sights of God should flood your heart with thankfulness. Because you have placed your faith in Christ, pause and relish this awe-inspiring truth: God – the all-knowing, all-powerful, victorious, glorious, ruling-over-all God – is for you. You can take encouragement in the reality that this matchless God is on your side today.

David knew what it was like to have enemies, yet he recognized that God was for him. Not a carved idol on a shelf, but the true and living God was on his side:

If the LORD had not been on our side—

let Israel now declare—

if the LORD had not been on our side

when men attacked us,

when their anger flared against us,

then they would have swallowed us alive (Psalm 124:1-3, ESV).

The children of Israel were under attack; the enemy was out to destroy them. But God was on Israel’s side. He wasn’t just observing the conflict, but He was actively fighting on behalf of His children. David witnessed God’s hand in the battle and declared that if the LORD hadn’t been there, the enemy would’ve “swallowed us alive.”

Battles abound where we live today. We feel it, don’t we? There’s an enemy who is out to destroy us, but in God we have a rock-solid hope. No matter what forces might come against us, we have the assurance that our bigger-than-we-can-imagine God is on our side.

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.

What can man do to me?

The Lord is on my side as my helper;

I shall look in triumph on those who hate me (Psalm 118:6-7, ESV).
