As a teenager I remember riding to school and listening to the Earl Pitts commentary on the radio usually played on local country music stations. These were always centered on a real life topic that we all have an opinion on such as gas prices, dressing up for church, so-called global warming, etc. It was rather humorous to say the least. He would end each rant with “Wake up America!” That’s exactly what I want to say these days when watching the news.
We’re in election season. You can’t watch television and browse the internet without reading something about the Iowa Caucus and other upcoming primaries. What I find disappointing, is this election cycle has really shown how divided America is. Even among parties, we’re so hostile towards each other. One presidential candidate has hurled insults about the personal appearance of other candidates. Another candidate is being investigated by the FBI for possibly compromising national security information. One more candidate is running as an admitted socialist. It’s the equivalent to a circus.
While we find this election cycle rather entertaining at times, is this really what America needs? Are we okay with a reality T.V. star, possible felon, and admitted socialist running for President of the United States?
I know what most answers will be, “Well, it’s America, anyone can run for President.” Technically, almost anyone can run for the highest office in the U.S. as long as they pass some standard requirements laid out in Article 2 Section 1 of the Constitution.
My main concern is this: America is in decline morally and financially and has been for years, possibly even decades. Will we allow our country to continue its descent into utter darkness? This transcends party affiliation and candidate preference.
American families are struggling. Some men and women can’t find work. Others work so much that their children don’t get the attention they need. Nearly 45% of all births in the U.S. in 2013 were out of wedlock. Divorce is devastating families. The national debt is creeping up to 20 trillion dollars. Muslims have established a caliphate in the Middle East and in return are enforcing sharia law. The list goes on.
Who we elect as our next president is a sign as to where our country will go from here, both morally and spiritually.
In 2 Chronicles 14 King Asa reigned in the land of Judah. Verses 2-4 say, “And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.He took away the foreign altars and the high places and broke down the pillars and cut down the Asherim and commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, and to keep the law and the commandment.”
America needs a King Asa of our day. In order for this to occur we must do as Earl Pitts suggest, “Wake up America!”
