Confusion is no longer just a small part of politics; it has become a primary tool to achieve various political goals.
If we look at the major public debate issues, we find that they are often not overly complex but are presented in a way that is intentionally unclear, making the arguments
difficult to follow.
Words that once had simple and concrete meanings are being softened or redefined. Policies are deliberately described in ways that come across as compassionate or harmless, when, in reality, the actual consequences are dangerous … sometimes fatal.
For example, supporters of abortion – the murder of babies in the womb – call themselves “pro-choice.” The culture says kids who struggle with gender dysphoria should receive agender-affirming “care” in the form of radical sexual mutilation. Those in favor of lax immigration laws and flooding our country with illegal immigrants claim their support is out of empathy. Some of these people even cite passages of Scripture to justify illegal immigration while ignoring the parts of the Bible that reinforce national sovereignty and detail God’s establishment of boundaries on earth.
Disguise
Secular humanists disguise their precarious ideologies as good, and the Bible speaks directly to this kind of confusion. Scripture warns against blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and evil, truth and falsehood. That warning is not only for personal faith but also for public life.
Ephesians 5:6-8 says, “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light.”
Confusion is not harmless; it carries the weight of real and lasting consequences. When government policies are passed without a clear representation of their intended outcomes, truth is obscured, accountability fades, and the most vulnerable are often left to pay the cost.
Discernment
Christians are not called to panic or argue endlessly over every issue, but they are called to be discerning. Discernment starts with simple questions: What does this actually mean? What will change if this passes? Who decides, and who will bear the weight of the consequences?
We must seek clarity from those pushing these deceptive ideas and policies. When people say they are in favor of a certain policy or law or ideology, yet use vague or deceptive language to explain it, then we must ask for clarity. For example, what does it really mean to be “pro-choice”?
Groups such as AFA Action work to make civic issues easier to understand. Its aim is not to tell people what to think, but to help people see clearly enough to decide for themselves.
A free society cannot thrive when its people are left in the dark. Laws should be understandable, definitions should be accurate, and decisions that shape the future should not depend on confusion for success.
Clarity does not eliminate disagreement, but it does protect truth. And truth, even when uncomfortable, is always worth defending.
