In a world full of stories about overcoming hardship, Glenn Cunningham’s life shines brightly as a true example of hope and perseverance. In this episode of It’s My Turn, Brother Don Wildmon takes us back to the winter of 1916, when a young Glenn suffered a terrible accident that left him severely burned and facing a devastating prognosis. Doctors told him he would likely never walk again – but Glenn refused to accept that fate.
With his mother’s steadfast love and encouragement, he began an exhausting journey of recovery. For six long months, they worked together tirelessly, massaging his legs and praying for strength. Then, miraculously, Glenn took his first steps. That moment marked the beginning of an extraordinary athletic journey that would eventually make him one of the greatest runners of his time.
Glenn’s story is about far more than athletic triumph; it’s a beautiful reminder of the strength of determination and the resilience of the human spirit. After winning his first mile race at just twelve years old, he went on to shatter records and earn the title of the world’s fastest indoor miler. He received the prestigious James E. Sullivan Award and broke the Olympic record for the 1500 meters in 1936.
Yet Glenn’s legacy reaches far beyond the track. After earning his master’s degree, he dedicated his life to serving others through education and mentorship. Alongside his wife, Ruth, he opened their home to more than 8,000 young people in need of care and guidance. Together, they built a haven of hope, showing what it truly means to live with purpose and compassion.
In this episode, we honor the enduring legacy of Glenn Cunningham – a life grounded in faith, fueled by hope, and driven by the belief that miracles happen when we commit ourselves to something greater than ourselves. Glenn’s story reminds us that no matter how impossible the odds may seem, with determination and the support of those who believe in us, we can rise above and inspire others along the way.
