Knowing the Bible is foundational to being a well-educated individual. That’s because the Bible is the bedrock of our legal system and the fountain of Western civilization in much of its art, literature, and music.
A couple of weeks ago on The Stand Radio, I had the opportunity to speak with Elizabeth Ridenour, the President of the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools (NCBCPS). Despite some opposition from the ALCU, Elizabeth’s non-profit organization has successfully introduced the Bible curriculum at no cost to over 4,200 public high schools in 42 states.
We also discussed the legal landscape surrounding the use of the Bible in public schools. Courts have stated that, while proselytizing isn't allowed, the curriculum can be used to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Bible from a historical and literary perspective.
Over the course of a year, students read through the entire Bible, gaining insights into figures like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses, as well as Jewish laws and customs.
The National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools is also taking an important stand for the legal rights of students to access the Bible as an educational resource. Elizabeth emphasized the importance of knowing and standing up for these rights, which has been a key factor in the curriculum’s success.
I hope you’ll take a moment and listen to my interview with Elizabeth Ridenour. Whether you’re an educator or parent, you’ll be surprised at how easy it can be to get this unique Bible curriculum into your local public schools at no cost. As believers, we know that understanding the history and personalities in the Bible is the first step in ultimately knowing the God of the Bible.
