U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is taking action to stop a Department of Defense (DoD) policy that authorizes taxpayer dollars to fund abortions for military personnel and their dependents. A recent DoD policy of paying travel and granting paid time off for those seeking an elective abortion undermines the Hyde Amendment, which specifically prohibits tax dollars from being used to perform abortions.
The senator said, "Federal law only allows the military to provide abortions in very narrow circumstances: rape, incest, and threat to the life of the mother. Yet, the Biden administration has turned the DoD into an abortion travel agency. They did it using a memo. The Biden administration wants abortion on demand for not just those enlisted in our military, but their family members as well."
On his website, Sen. Tuberville clearly outlines his pledge to hold up the confirmation of Department of Defense general and flag officer nominees brought before the Senate until he gets some answers as to why Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has defied the intent of the law.
Senator Tuberville's stand forces the Senate to consider and vote on the nominations one person at a time, instead of in groups, which is considerably faster. The nominations can still be approved by the Senate, but the Majority Leader must make additional time for them to be considered on the floor. This time-consuming process usually results in very few, if any, nomination votes. Essentially, this puts nominations on "hold."
Sen. Tuberville said, "I warned Pentagon officials that I would block their nominees in the Senate if they went through with it (the policy). They did it anyway. I’ve kept my word and put a hold on their nominees."
We applaud Sen. Tuberville's strong stand against the use of taxpayer dollars being used to fund abortion expenses. Your senators should stand with him too!
The best action you can take to support Sen. Tuberville is to urge your senators to support his efforts.
Email your senators today, letting them know you are proud of Sen. Tuberville's actions and want them to do likewise. We have prepared a letter you can send to your senators today!
