When most Christians think of abortion in America, they likely think of brick-and-mortar abortion “clinics.” Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the abortion iceberg.
Chemical abortion, also known as medical abortion, is a method of ending a pregnancy through the use of “medication.”
The Stand asked Pastor Joseph Parker, AFA director of outreach and intersession, for his insights on the dangers of chemical abortion and why Christians should be aware of them.
Parker said, “Today, most abortions are chemical abortion. A woman can self-administer this at home, often without the supervision of doctors. And there have been many sad results from that.
“So when it comes to this issue, believers are wise to go above and beyond the average person, diligently becoming informed about it because God will use us. And the reality is … the average person really doesn’t know much about this issue.”
Why are so many women turning to chemical abortion? The answer is complex, but it may be that many women feel isolated and trapped in difficult circumstances. They may feel financially unable to support a child or uncertain of their ability to care for a baby. These are legitimate concerns that pro-life Christians must address.
Easy access, greater risk
Chemical abortion offers a deceivingly easy way out, and institutions that should be standing for the health of all are instead making chemical abortion more available to the public.
Thanks to the efforts of the Biden administration and the FDA, these baby-killing chemicals may now be purchased in pharmacies or ordered by mail where state laws allow.
The Biden administration has formalized a process to allow retail pharmacies to participate in the abortion pill business, prioritizing the interests of the abortion industry over women’s health and safety.
Pharmacies certified to sell drugs for chemical abortion are still subject to state abortion restriction laws. However, this FDA decision is certain to increase the number of chemical abortions across the nation.
One such product is Mifeprex. The FDA posted on its website that “Mifeprex and its generic Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg are approved, in a regimen with misoprostol, to end an intrauterine pregnancy through 10 weeks gestation (70 days or less since the first day of a patient’s last menstrual period). The FDA first approved Mifeprex in 2000 and approved a generic version of Mifeprex, Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg in 2019.”
Regardless of the FDA’s approval, chemical abortions are dangerous, not only to the unborn child, but also to the mother. They involve the use of chemicals to kill and expel a baby, and for a mother, can result in serious complications such as sepsis, hemorrhaging, and even death.
“It is irresponsible for the FDA to allow pharmacies to sell these drugs,” observed Wesley Wildmon, AFA vice president of outreach.
Wicked world, deep deception
Why do authorities and experts seem adamant to push the narrative that these murderous chemicals are safe?
“We live in a wicked world,” Parker said. “Deception is all over the place. It comes in all different forms. There are people who, if they believe in a cause, will lie in a minute to further their cause. When it comes to abortion, if a person is committed to murdering babies, what will they not do? So to lie or deceive people about it being safe … that’s easy for them.
“Also, abortion is a huge moneymaking enterprise. There are lots of people who make huge amounts of money from it. There are politicians and preachers and people in all different professions who are bought and paid for.”
Parker added, “And they’ll get up and say what somebody pays them to say. Deception is a major part of our culture today. And it’s important for believers to be wise enough to recognize that.”
However, even as the darkness seems to grow, there are still glimmers of hope in our nation, one of which could even be described as miraculous: Abortion Pill Reversal (APR).
Reverse abortion, save life
The Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN) administers a protocol designed to increase the chances of a baby’s survival even after the first abortion pill has been taken by the mother.
How does it work? The process is explained on the APR FAQ page: “An ultrasound will be done as soon as possible to confirm heart rate, placement, and dating of the pregnancy. The doctor or another medical provider will prescribe progesterone, given as a pill to be taken orally or vaginally or possibly by intramuscular injection. The treatment will usually continue through the first trimester of pregnancy.”
“It’s very wise for believers to read and get informed,” added Parker, “not only to know what a chemical abortion is, but also to learn a lot about abortion pill reversal.
“One blessing within the midst of the tragedy of abortion is that chemical abortions often can be reversed if caught in time. The APR is not dangerous. In fact, it utilizes something that has been in medicine for many, many years.”
There are some wonderful stories of many abortions that have been reversed through APR because a woman, right after she took the first pill, changed her mind. She thought, Can I undo this? Can I save my baby? And by the grace of God, many have been saved.
On the APR website, one woman shared her personal testimony of choosing chemical abortion, but she later regretted the decision and sought reversal treatment through APR.
“When I discovered that I was pregnant,” she said, “like most 19-year-olds with an unplanned pregnancy, I was terrified. I was scared of what my parents would say or do, that I was going to be a disappointment, and about my financial future. I was certain I couldn’t financially support and provide all the care a baby needed. ... I was sure my only choice was abortion.”
However, after experiencing remorse and researching reversal options, she was able to successfully reverse the chemical abortion and continue her pregnancy.
While Christians can be thankful for mercies such as APR, the battle for life is far from over. The church must stand staunchly as a defender of the weak and helpless, and that means remaining vigilant and willing to fight a very spiritual battle.
Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV) says, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
“Well of course we renew our minds by reading and meditating on the Word of God,” said Parker. “But a clear directive from this verse is that we’re to serve God sacrificially. And that’s a message the church needs to hear loud and clear.
“We follow Jesus sacrificially and to the point where sometimes maybe it hurts. Still, He’s our greatest role model for protecting the sanctify of human life.”
