‘Culture Warrior’ documentary tells powerful untold story of effective conservative Christian activism
TUPELO, Miss. — The courageous life and far-reaching impact of Mississippi preacher Rev. Donald Wildmon has finally made its way to audiences in the new documentary film “Culture Warrior: Don Wildmon and the Battle for Decency.” The film was released by American Family Association (AFA) and is now available for streaming at the film’s website, culturewarrior.movie.
“Culture Warrior” is a multi-faceted chronicle of the rise of Christian activism — taking viewers through some of the most contested culture war battles of the past 50 years. When Don sits down to watch TV with his family in the Christmas season of 1976 and finds himself bombarded by violence, profanity and sexual immorality, he decides to stand up and speak out — leading him to take on additional fights against Playboy, Hollywood, TV advertisers, the art world, the ACLU, Disney and the homosexual agenda. Through a dynamic use of archival footage, music, and modern-day interviews, “Culture Warrior” gives viewers powerful insights into their own recent history.
“Don Wildmon is an unlikely hero who was constantly misrepresented and villainized by the media for his courageous stand,” says the film’s director, M.D. Perkins. “We are excited for people to hear his story in his own words — and the first-hand accounts of other culture warriors who knew Don best. We carefully crafted something that isn’t just about the history of one Christian leader but tried to make the definitive case for why his standstill matters today.”
The film is released at a time when many books and documentaries are looking back at events and figures from the late 20th century with films like “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” or even “The Kings of Tupelo.” With controversial topics of transgenderism, gay Pride, Porn Hub, woke Hollywood and “lawfare” constantly in the news, “Culture Warrior” is a timely reflection on the need for Christians to be salt and light in a decaying culture.
“Beyond examining the life and ministry of Don Wildmon, ‘Culture Warrior’ is a look at one man’s desire to make a difference in the culture,” said Executive Vice President of AFA Ed Vitagliano. “He wanted to get a Christian perspective out into the culture, which is why he started AFA Radio. Don wanted to have the opportunity to have his say and put a Biblical perspective on the things happening in American culture.”
The documentary is available to watch for free on the film’s website, culturewarrior.movie.
