Mom fired over Facebook posts for expressing her religious beliefs

Monday, February 05, 2024 @ 10:54 AM

TUPELO, Miss. — A Christian mom was fired over two Facebook posts from 2018 that she shared on her account expressing her concern for her son’s education. The first post shared a petition that was challenging the government’s plans for implementing relationship and sex education lessons in schools, and the second post shared an article regarding concerns over books promoting transgender ideologies in schools. Higgs shared, “From the beginning, despite the many attempts by the school to suggest otherwise, this has always been about my Christian beliefs and me being discriminated against for expressing them in my own time.”

Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, voiced how the outcome of this case will have wide-ranging effects on our nation.

“America was founded on values of freedom of expression and religious liberty,” said Wildmon. “The termination of Higgs for simply expressing her beliefs on social media in her personal capacity with no link to her employer is a blatant contradiction to the principles our nation was built upon. This case is not only about the firing of one person, but its outcome will hold significant implications to the preservation and safeguarding of America’s fundamental rights to freedom of expression and religious beliefs beyond the workplace.”
