Conservative lawmakers in Nebraska bring religion back to public school education

Monday, February 12, 2024 @ 07:58 AM

TUPELO, Miss. — Last Monday, Nebraska lawmakers proposed several bills in an effort to integrate religion into public schools. The bills will give parents more control over the books that are available to their children in school libraries, allow children to receive credit for attending after-school religion classes, and propose school funding to include private schools while also banning the state from being involved in private school curriculums or religious beliefs. As the Chairman of the Legislature’s Education Committee, Republican state Sen. Dave Murman has already revived his parental rights bill in order to ease the difficulty that parents may have in objecting to their child’s curriculum. According to GOP State Sen. Loren Lippincott, allowing children to learn about religion and their religious beliefs would help students “develop a stronger sense of morality.”

Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the Government Affairs Affiliate of the American Family Association, commented on the proposed bills and expressed how Nebraska’s lawmakers are taking a step in the right direction toward returning education to its grassroots.

“This proposal marks a pivotal moment in the restoration of the educational foundation of America,” said Wildmon. “The Bible was the primary textbook used in America’s earliest educational institutions. Ivy Leagues such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Dartmouth which are looked at today as pillars of academic excellence were originally established as Christian institutions and owe their origins to the Gospel. The founders of these institutions were firm believers in the fact that no true knowledge or wisdom existed apart from Jesus Christ. Restoration of our educational system back to its Biblical roots is foundational in the re-establishment of America as a nation that upholds its motto, ‘In God We Trust.’”
