AFA calls on President-Elect Trump to reinstate the Mexico City Policy and review funding for United Nations population control initiatives (1)
TUPELO, Miss. — In light of the recent change in U.S. leadership, American Family Association (AFA) calls on the incoming Trump Administration to pledge immediate reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy, also called the “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance” policy, which prohibits U.S. federal funding from supporting organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning overseas. This policy has historically guided U.S. foreign aid to respect the values of life and family upheld by millions of Americans.
“American foreign aid should reflect the values of the American people, upholding the sanctity of life and ending the harmful and racist population control policies the United Nations is helping impose around the world,” said Walker Wildmon, Vice President of AFA. “The Mexico City Policy and morally responsible United Nations funding are essential to achieving these goals.”
The Mexico City Policy was first established in 1984 and has been adopted or rescinded depending on the stance of the current U.S. administration on reproductive health funding. “By reinstating this policy, the administration can once again take a clear stand in favor of life-affirming policies that respect both American taxpayer values and the sovereignty of nations,” said Wildmon.
“AFA urges the incoming Trump Administration to closely review and, if necessary, redirect or defund U.S. funding contributions to the United Nations for population control and reproductive health initiatives,” Wildmon continued. “A re-evaluation of these contributions can ensure that American taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly, in line with ethical and moral standards that respect human dignity and family values.”
The current model of United Nations funding does not consistently provide oversight regarding the enforcement of ethical boundaries or local laws, raising concerns among millions of U.S. citizens. Currently, the U.N. is sending nearly $100 million to fund population control programs through its agency, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
“AFA calls on President Trump and his appointed Secretary of State to take swift action to reinstate the Mexico City Policy and to critically examine U.S. funding for United Nations population programs. We believe these actions will be a meaningful first step toward a U.S. foreign aid strategy that promotes ethical, life-affirming policies worldwide,” Wildmon said.
For over 40 years, AFA has operated within the mission to inform, equip, and activate individuals to strengthen the moral foundations of American culture and give aid to the church here and abroad in its task of fulfilling the Great Commission.
