 TUPELO, Miss. —The American Family Association (AFA, afa.net) rejoices with researchers at the American Bible Society (ABS) as Americans turn to the Bible for answers. There is no better time, and there is no better resource.

The ABS 2021 State of the Bible report suggests that people are looking for answers, and they are finding those answers in the Bible. The report estimates that over 10 million more Americans turned to the Bible in the past year than in previous years, as one in four adults reported reading the Bible more frequently during the pandemic compared to last year’s report.

Findings from the report confirm Americans are turning to the Bible:

  • The data suggests that over 181 million Americans opened a Bible in the past year compared to 169 million adults who used a Bible at least occasionally in the year before;
  • The study found that roughly 16% of American adults read the Bible most days during the week, up from 12% in its 2020 report;
  • 34% said they read the Bible once a week or more, while 50% said they read the Bible less than twice per year;
  • The report states that 63% of respondents reported their Bible usage was the same as the previous year. Although 9% said their Bible engagement decreased in the last year, 24% reported more frequent Bible reading during that time.

 “With all the good news regarding the apparent end of the Covid-19 pandemic, this might be the best news of all,” said Ed Vitagliano, executive vice president of American Family Association. “The Bible is so incredibly important to the history and formation of this nation, as well as the rise of America to prosperity and prominence in the world. More than its cultural significance, however, is its importance to individuals. The word of God points people to God and Jesus Christ, and more than ever today, the people of this country need the Gospel and the truth of Scripture. Christians should follow up on this obvious spiritual hunger and share Christ with their neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family.”
