American Family Association: ‘May God Have Mercy on Our Nation’

TUPELO, Miss.— With Inauguration Day approaching on January 20th, there have been major concerns about national security in Washington D.C., and even in state capitals due to violence. President Trump released a video after the impeachment vote, condemning all the violence. The Republican National Committee (RNC) released a statement, saying “Now is the time to come together as one nation, united in the peaceful pursuit of our common democratic purpose.” In addition, National Guard troops in and around the US Capitol in D.C. will be armed beyond the protective gear they have been carrying; and the Secret Service has been organizing this massive effort to protect the city of D.C. between now and Inauguration Day.

“Our nation is clearly in deep trouble,” said Ed Vitagliano, executive vice president of the American Family Association (AFA, www.AFA.net). “As we saw during 2020, some of our largest cities were beset by peaceful protests as well as mindless, opportunistic violence and the destruction of property.

“The same appears to have happened at the United States Capitol. Many people are very, very angry, not only about politics, but even worse, with each other. But lawlessness from either end of the political spectrum is not the answer. Jesus warned that in times of lawlessness, people’s hearts grow cold (Matthew 24:12). Right now, the only thing that will soften people’s hearts is the Gospel.

“We encourage Christians to reach out to their neighbors with the hope found in Jesus Christ. We are in desperate need of a spiritual awakening. One of our nation’s mottos, E pluribus unum, means ‘Out of many, one.’ If we do not turn our hearts to God, the opposite will happen: the one will be torn into many. May God have mercy on our nation.”
