As Parents Face Uncertainty, American Family Association and One Million Moms Remind of Hope

Tuesday, March 24, 2020 @ 02:54 PM

TUPELO, Miss.—Like people of all walks of life around the world, parents have been faced with unprecedented challenges: fulfilling the role of co-teacher while children are home from school, easing anxious young minds and acknowledging possible financial struggles on the horizon.

One Million Moms (1MM, www.onemillionmoms.com), a division of American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net), has reached out to parents with biblical wisdom and hope: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9, NIV).

“The spread of COVID-19 is causing great concern all over the world,” said 1MM Director Monica Cole. “We are surrounded by uncertainty, but as Christians, we should continue to lean on the Lord and remember what the Bible instructs us to do when faced with situations such as the coronavirus: ‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind’ (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV).

“As believers, we should not panic nor live in fear but instead rely on what God tells us in Scripture,” Cole added. “Obviously, we need to use common sense and practice good hygiene by washing our hands and sanitizing our surroundings. It’s smart to be clean and healthy and do what we can, but it is also very important to pray for God’s protection from disease and pestilence over ourselves and our loved ones.”

Cole also shared Ephesians 6:10-12 (NIV) as a basis for what could be a family devotional and time of discussion: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Cole added that she and her family have prayed through Psalm 91 daily and read the blog post titled “Protection Through Life’s Storms from Pastor Joseph Parker, American Family Radio host and director of outreach and intercession for AFA. The blog, in which Parker explains how to apply Psalm 91 personally, also includes a prayer of protection based on the wisdom and power in this psalm.

“Instead of worrying, let’s pray,” Cole reminds. “Pray for healing for our country and the entire world. God is able. This is the prime opportunity to witness and share the gospel with others. We have been praying for another Great Awakening for this country, and this could very well be the time and place for a great revival. God has a plan, and we will trust in Him. Jesus said, ‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33, NIV). We need to pray more and worry less. Will you commit to pray?”
