AFA’s #BoycottTarget Pledge at 1.15 Million Strong and Gaining Ground
TUPELO, Miss.—American Family Association (AFA,www.afa.net) is reporting that more than 1.15 million concerned citizens have now signed the #BoycottTarget pledge since the retail giant publicized its policy to allow self-identifying transgender individuals access to store bathrooms and fitting rooms that correspond with their own gender identity, thus allowing easy access for predators and voyeurs to put women and children at risk.
Over the weekend, AFA sent an Action Alert email, also posted on AFA’s blog “The Stand,” to its one million-plus friends and supporters. The alert details how two individuals had investigated the Target bathroom policy for themselves.
In the first video, a male consumer—in a polite exchange with a Target representative—asks about Target’s bathroom policy and expresses his concerns, yet is given permission to use the women’s bathroom.
In the second video, another man politely asks a Target representative for verification that he can, indeed, use the women’s restroom, to which the reply is, “Yes.”
“We are immensely thankful for the more than one million concerned citizens who have stood up for common sense and for women’s safety by boycotting Target until its bathroom policy is changed,” said AFA President Tim Wildmon. “It is because of the commitment of people like those who have signed #BoycottTarget pledge that corporate America will know that we will voice our opinions about harmful policies with our wallets. No longer can we allow vocal activists with a clear agenda to compromise the safety of our mothers, wives, daughters and friends. Again, AFA is reiterating that the disagreement over this policy does not reflect on the transgender community, but on the very real possibility that those with evil intentions will take advantage of a door that has been opened to them.”
AFA is asking concerned Americans to take action in the #BoycottTarget campaign in three ways:
- Sign the #BoycottTarget pledge online.
- Print the paper petition to distribute among friends and family members.
- Call Target and politely let local managers know you are boycotting the store until policies change and how a boycott of this magnitude will hurt business. Find local Target store phone numbers here.
AFA’s #BoycottTarget initiative has garnered widespread media attention, as AFA continues to maintain that while the Target policy aims to be welcoming to the transgender community, it opens the door for predators and voyeurs who would take advantage of such a policy.
