The church – the voice of grace and truth
Sanctity of Life Sunday is rolling around in just a few days. Sadly, many churches fail to recognize this day or touch on the issue of abortion the entire year.
Abortion is a subject of severity – one that some claim is terribly inappropriate for the pulpit. But it is widely practiced in our society and in our churches.
Protestant reformer Martin Luther said “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ.”
Silence produces at least two devastating effects:
1) Gives permission to those who are currently or will consider abortion in the future, whether it is the woman herself or those who will coerce or encourage her to follow through with it.
2) Fails to call those who have directly or indirectly participated in abortion to repentance and healing found in the mercies of Christ. Some self-justify, but the majority dwell in a prison of shame.
