[A]nd that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

Are you flunking Sunday School? “Of course not!” would be a typical response. “I don’t even go to Sunday School.”

Well, therein lies the problem. In school, if you don’t show up for class enough times, typically you may receive an F and flunk the class!

So, there are a lot of folks who go to church and are flunking Sunday School.

“Well”, you may argue, “I go to worship service in church. I just don’t care to attend Sunday School.”

A very important question to ask then is “Why not?”

“Well, I attend Wednesday night Bible study,” some may add.

Great! That can be both very wise and productive to do.

Sunday school participation and Wednesday night Bible Study participation are both really great discipleship activities to be a part of.

Yet there is a spiritual habit more important than attending Sunday School and mid-week Bible study. That habit is your personal reading and meditating on the Word of God – every day.

This is a foundational spiritual habit that any and all believers are wise to have.

Your personal reading, studying, and meditating on Scripture on a daily basis is much more important than any of these other activities.  All of them are good, but your personal time in the Word of God is most crucial.

Why?

Because nothing can replace your one-on-one time in the Word of God. This is the time you are spending with Jesus, who is the Word of God.

This is your time to feed your spirit. This is something that no one can do for you.  You have to spend this time with the Word of God yourself.

A goal of reading no less than three chapters a day is a good goal to pursue. It might be reading the same chapter three times, or it may be reading three different chapters.

Either way, you are feeding and nourishing your spirit.

Also, listening to the Word of God in audio form is very wise and edifying as well.  We are wise to supplement our time reading and meditating on the Word of God with time listening to the recorded Word of God.

Both reading and listening to the Word are very fruitful and edifying activities.

Again, nothing should replace reading and meditating on the Word of God.

Once you have the spiritual habit of reading and studying the Word of God daily as a part of your lifestyle, please don’t stop there.

Parents, we are very wise to teach and train our children to read the Word of God out loud to us daily in our homes. This is an activity that can bring about great fruit in the hearts and minds of our children at home.

Please make it a goal for you and your family to get plugged into Sunday School and Bible Study. Each of these activities can contribute greatly to your spiritual growth and the spiritual growth of your family.

Often in Sunday School or Bible study, a gifted teacher can be used of the Lord to help you tremendously in coming to better understand the Word of God and to grow spiritually.

Remember this question: What is the point behind personal Bible reading, attending Sunday School and attending weekly Bible Study? Why are these activities so important?

Each of these activities are used by the Holy Spirit to help us draw closer to Christ and to become more like Him.  Each of these activities edify and strengthen us spiritually. These activities help us to be better equipped spiritual warriors on the battlefield of life.

So, if you and your family are attending church, that is a great thing. Why not go an hour or so earlier and receive the Bible teaching one can receive in a typical Sunday School class?

And why not decide that you will start to be a part of mid-week Bible study?

No need to continue to flunk Sunday School. Why not make it your goal to become a “Straight A” student?

As you and your family begin to make the Word of God a big part of your lives and lifestyle, you all will be the richer and smarter for it.
