The world can feel unpredictable, and with so many challenges coming our way, having a strong foundation matters more than ever. In this episode of It’s My Turn, Bro Don Wildmon uses a vivid image to get this point across – a freight train cutting across the landscape. If you’ve ever watched one rumble by, you know how long these trains can be, sometimes carrying a staggering 26 million pounds of cargo. What’s truly remarkable is that all that weight is supported by just a little more than two square feet of track. Bro Don uses this image to explore what it means to build your life on something solid.
He reminds us that, just like those railroad tracks need to be strong enough to hold up a massive train, our lives need a foundation that can withstand real pressure. For Bro Don, that means rooting ourselves in faith. He draws on the teachings of Jesus, who told the story of a wise man building his house on rock – and a foolish man building his house on sand. The difference, Jesus said, was that one actually listened and put His words into practice, while the other did not.
His challenge to listeners is simple but profound: Are we just hearing the message, or are we living it out? He believes faith isn’t just about what we say we believe; it’s proven by what we do, especially when life gets tough. When tragedy strikes, or uncertainty looms, a faith that’s actively lived out – that’s built on action – stands strong, much like that well-supported train.
He also notes that it’s tempting to settle for an easy, “ready-made” version of Christianity, one that’s comfortable and doesn’t ask much of us. But when life’s storms hit, those shallow foundations rarely hold up. Instead, he encourages everyone to take a closer look at what supports their own faith.
Just as engineers work diligently to make sure buildings won’t topple in a storm, we should be intentional about strengthening our spiritual foundations. That means not only believing, but actively engaging with the teachings of Jesus and allowing them to shape our lives.
This episode wraps up with a reminder that faith isn’t something we simply have – it’s something we invest in and nurture. If our foundation is strong and grounded in Christ, we’ll be better equipped to face whatever life throws at us.
