More than seven billion. To be exact, 7.3 billion.

That is the total number of packages the United States Postal Service delivered last year. Meanwhile, in 2024, FedEx reported daily package deliveries of 16 million, while UPS’s daily average was 22.4 million.

Packages are everywhere, and our faithful, hardworking delivery personnel are among the most diligent. This is evident in how, for many of us, these parcels arrive at our addresses (or the intended recipient’s address) within two or three days of the buyer hitting the famous “place order” button.

I am notorious for clicking that button – and I know I’m not the only one.

Capital One Shopping shared that “an estimated 2.77 billion people globally shop online in 2025, including 288.5 million Americans.”

Nowadays, many Americans are not fans of shopping in stores, and their reasons vary. Instead, we really enjoy browsing online and having all our items quickly delivered directly to our front porch.

However, last week, I actually went into a supercenter for the first time in a very long time.

On this trip, I spent some time with a dear childhood friend shopping for a toy drive in honor of her late daughter. This friend is someone I consider strong in her faith, and I have seen her demonstrate that many times, especially in the Christ-honoring ministry she started in honor of her sweet little girl who passed last year.

We went to lunch with my one-year-old and her oldest daughter in tow. Then, we headed straight to the toy section of our local store to pick out gifts that the kids and their siblings in the hospital would enjoy.

On the way home, our conversation shifted to the convenience of our culture and how easily we can obtain anything we desire in a matter of a few days.

“How can people wait on God if they can’t even wait two days for their packages?” she said.

And it was one of the most thought-provoking things I had heard in a very long time.

She’s right!

It is easier than ever to rush into doing the “big things” happening around us.

Of course, we should get involved in our community, fight to protect the innocence of our children, speak out against the cruelties happening in the nation, and share the gospel with those who are lost. All of those things are much needed!

But what about patiently waiting and intently listening to what the Lord has to share with us? Are we taking the time to wait on Him? Or are we eagerly rushing to mark off the next thing on our to-do list?

When it comes to our faith, trusting the Lord can bring some of the biggest blessings of our lives, but sometimes we have to wait for Him and forgo our own timeline.

Take Sarah, Abraham’s wife, for example.

In Genesis 18, we read about how the Lord promised Abraham that they would have a child, despite their old age. And that as soon as Sarah heard the news, she was confused and actually laughed at God’s words! After all, a few chapters earlier (Genesis 16), she truly believed that she would never have a child and had her husband conceive a child with Hagar.

But God.

Because that child of Sarah and Abraham was part of God’s plan and promise, even after years and years of waiting, she had her beloved baby.

Yet, as my friend said, nowadays many of us modern-day Americans can’t imagine waiting a week for a package to be delivered – let alone years for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

Thankfully, as Christ followers, when the seasons of waiting strike, we can know that the Lord’s plans are good and that He is faithful.

Our faith isn’t meant to be as simple as two-day shipping.

In fact, it can take many days, years, or even decades for us to see the Lord’s plan unfold. If we cling tight to His word, our strength will be renewed and our faith will be deepened - He promises it!

Yet those who wait for the Lord
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary (Isaiah 40:31).
