In this episode of It’s My Turn, Brother Don Wildmon takes listeners on a personal journey through the skies, as he shares an experience that many can relate to – the fear of flying. For some, the thought of being thousands of feet in the air can be daunting, often stemming from unfamiliarity with flying.

He reflects on moments that once filled him with anxiety, particularly during takeoff and landing – two critical phases of any flight. He recounts a memorable incident while leaving Paris when the plane’s power was suddenly reduced. In that moment, fear gripped him, fueled by his limited flying experience.

However, as time passed and he flew more frequently, his understanding of aviation grew. This knowledge transformed his fear into enjoyment, allowing him to appreciate the beauty of flying rather than dread it.

He draws parallels between his experiences in the cockpit and a deeper, more spiritual journey. He references the wisdom of Aristotle, who stated that “fear is pain arising from the anticipation of evil,” and Emerson, who noted that “fear always springs from ignorance.” These insights resonate beyond the realm of aviation and touch upon the universal fear of the unknown, particularly regarding faith.

Many people harbor a fear of God, not because of His nature, but due to a lack of understanding. Just as he learned to trust pilots and aircraft safety, he believes that understanding God leads to a deeper appreciation of His love and greatness.

Fear can be transformed into profound love, whether for flying or for God. Brother Don’s journey from fear to understanding serves as a reminder that knowledge is a powerful tool—one that can change our perspectives and enrich our lives.
