In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day (Genesis 1:1-8).
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day-to-day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat (Psalm 19:1–6).
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things (Romans 1:21–23).
I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation (Psalm 119:99).
Dr. I. M. “Smart”: Did God create the universe?
Little boy: Of course, He did! Everybody ought to know that! The Bible says so in Genesis chapter one!
Dr. S: Well, little man, how do we KNOW God created the universe?
Little boy: Cause the Bible says so! Haven’t you read the Bible?
Dr. S: How do we know the Bible is true?
Little boy: Well God is smarter than we are and when we read what He said in the Bible, we ought to believe Him.
Dr. S: Well, little fella, how do we know that the world wasn’t created by accident or chance?
Little boy: Don’t you go to church and Sunday school, and don’t you read the Bible? How could all of this big world and all the planets in the universe get here by accident or chance? They didn’t. God made them all. You should come to church with me. You could get a lot of answers to all of your questions.
Dr. S: Little man, I have been to some of the top schools in the world. I don’t need to learn anything from ignorant “churches and Sunday schools.”
Little boy: Well, I have finished the sixth grade and I have been in school a while. And when I learned about some of the wrong things they taught me in school, my dad and mom and my pastor helped me to learn the truth about some of the wrong things I learned in school. Yeah, come to my church and they will help to teach you about all the mistakes your teachers taught you in school and they will help you learn the truth – that everyone and everything was created by God.
Dr. S: There is no evidence that God exists!
Little boy: Sure there is! Who else made the world, the Sun, and the moon! And all the people in the world! Stuff like that can’t happen by accident! I think that if you will pray and give your heart to Jesus, and start reading your Bible, you’ll start to understand a whole lot of things.
Dr. S: (To himself) You poor ignorant child.
Little boy: (To himself) Poor man. He might become really smart one day if he will give his heart to Jesus and start reading his Bible.
