I sat in a waiting room this week.

I’ve been here a lot of times for checkups and whatnot. But let’s say this waiting room, in particular, was filled with beautiful women with different belly sizes.

As I saw mother after mother coming through the door mere days before Mother’s Day, I couldn’t help but be overjoyed for them and their season of life. Maybe it was their first Mother’s Day or their 31st – either way, it would be a day they could cherish. It has always fascinated me that a woman can walk around with the weight of two bodies instead of one. Isn’t it amazing?

But they came, walking – waddling – in and out of the same waiting room I sat in. I am not a mother yet, but that doesn’t stop me from being fascinated by how the Lord uses women. And before I knew it, the Lord reminded me of a group of mothers often not addressed – those moms without a baby – the ones who chose abortion.

Recently, I watched a debate between pro-life and pro-choice advocates. I always go into these knowing the truth, but I am intrigued to watch the pro-choice party stumble through the content. This one was no different; the pro-lifer came prepared. Full of knowledge and passion about her belief. The pro-choicer was loud and proud but could not combat her opposition’s statistics and biological truths.

Students for Life of America (SFL) estimates that each day, 2,360 women experience abortion every day. But the hearts of the women who experience abortion are wounded much deeper than any abortionist’s scalpel could cut. The SFL article linked above includes (hard to find) information about the negative impacts of abortion, also known as Post-Abortion Syndrome. Most mainstream sites, including Google, try their hardest to keep this information out of the site of moms looking for an abortion. They don’t want them to know the after-effects of abortion.

A few include:

  • emotional numbness
  • depression
  • feelings of regret or guilt
  • relationship difficulties
  • anxiety attacks
  • increase in alcohol or drug use
  • eating disorders
  • suicidal thoughts
  • low self-esteem
  • flashbacks, dreams, or nightmares.

And this Mother’s Day, I can’t help but think of the women trying to pick up the pieces of their lives that abortion stole from them. We often rightfully discuss mothers waiting to get pregnant or those who have experienced a miscarriage but forget those who were coerced or made a decision based on what was going on in their life at the time of an abortion.

To those women, I want you to know that you are seen and heard on this day of motherly celebration. I don’t know why you made the decision you did, and I don’t have to. You are loved and forgiven. The King of Kings holds your precious babe in His arms. He will also hold you if you let Him.

I’m sorry that you were lied to, abused, and hurt. He can make all things new. He is near to the brokenhearted – no matter how their heart was broken. He is comfort when there seems to be no way out.

Psalm 34:18 says,

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Matthew 11:28 says,

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Psalm 71:20 says,

Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth, you will again bring me up.

Psalm 147:3 says,

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

And these are just a few! Make no mistake; He cares for you. But He also forgives you.

Isaiah 1:18 says,

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Psalm 103:11-12 says,

His unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the East is from the West.

Colossians 1:13-14 says,

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

May you have time this Sunday to celebrate the grace and goodness of the one who loves you more than anyone.
