In today’s hypersexualized online environment, refusing to protect children from illegal obscene material is not just unacceptable, it’s dangerous.

Wisconsin Governor, Tony Evers, had the opportunity to stand with families and protect children from online exploitation by signing legislation (AB 105) to protect kids from the worst of the worst – child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Instead, he vetoed it.

That shameful decision is deeply disappointing. When faced with clear evidence of harm, overwhelming public concern, and a straightforward solution, Gov. Evers chose to leave children exposed and predators unchecked.

Now, however, the Wisconsin Legislature has the opportunity to fix what the governor got wrong. A two-thirds vote of the Legislature will override the governor’s veto of AB 105.

Please call and email your Wisconsin lawmakers and ask them to override the governor’s veto of AB 105. Your voice is necessary to ensure Wisconsin’s children are protected from predators.

WHAT AB 105 WOULD HAVE DONE

AB 105 is commonsense legislation that would have:

  • Required pornographic websites to verify users are age 18+ before accessing content that is legal for adults to view, but not legal for children to view
  • Prohibited the online distribution of illegal CSAM: illegal under state and federal law and illegal for both adults and children
  • Allowed child victims of illegal CSAM to sue websites profiting from child rape
  •  Included strong privacy protections—once age is verified, websites cannot retain personal identifying information

Similar laws have passed in at least 25 states and were upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last year. Even more telling:

  • AB 105 passed the Wisconsin State Assembly 69–22 in a bipartisan vote
  • AB 105 passed the Wisconsin Senate unanimously

Governor Evers is the first governor in America to veto age-verification legislation. He is likely the first governor in America to stop the victims of child rape from getting their day in court.

The Wisconsin Legislature, however, will be just as accountable as Gov. Evers if they don’t come together and overturn the governor’s veto.

Since Gov. Evers failed to protect Wisconsin children, it’s up to the Legislature to step up and override his veto.
