Do you know that the Attorney General of New Mexico just won a huge case against Meta/Facebook/Instagram because these social media platforms were found guilty of “misleading users about the safety of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and of enabling child sexual exploitation on those platforms.”

“Over the course of a decade, Meta has failed over and over again to act honestly and transparently. It's failed to act to protect young people in this state.”

That’s a quote from the New Mexico Attorney General’s office. The jury agreed and ruled against Meta for $375 million.

Now, Mississippi lawmakers have a chance – this week – to codify protections other states are using to hold social media platforms accountable for harming kids. But this legislation, the Keeping Kids Safe Online (HB 1224), must pass this week. After this week, the Mississippi session is over.

That’s why we need you to call and email your Mississippi lawmakers today.

These revelations are not new. In 2021, a Facebook whistleblower testified before Congress:

I believe that Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, weaken our democracy and much more. The company’s leadership knows ways to make Facebook and Instagram safer and won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their immense profits before people.

This is Meta’s “Big Tobacco Moment.” They are facing thousands of lawsuits because their products are harmful, and they know it and they have been hiding it. Just as with Big Tobacco, social media platforms have pushed their products on kids, resisting common sense safeguards like age verification. They have even helped predators target kids and knowingly blocked basic parental controls and knowledge. Just as with Big Tobacco, social media companies have used high-powered lobbyists to block Congress and the states from acting. Just as with Big Tobacco, internal documents and court filings are showing: THEY KNEW ALL ALONG.

Mississippi families have a chance to stop the Big Tech lobbyists from killing the Keeping Kids Safe Online Act, sponsored by Rep. Joey Hood.

But you must make your voice heard today.

Call and email your MS legislators and call the Speaker of the House and the Lt. Governor, head of the Senate, and ask them to pass the Keeping Kids Safe Online Act (HB 1224).

Please call today – this bill must pass this week, or the Big Tech Lobbyists will win again – and children will continue to be abused and harmed in Mississippi.
