I want to feel safe in my community and in my home. This is a good and very human desire. God Himself talks about being our safety and our refuge.

We also want our children to be safe. This is why we teach them to look both ways when crossing the street. This is why we lock our doors when we go out or go to bed. This is why we have speed limits and seat belts – commonsense protections to keep our kids, homes and communities safe.

Isn’t it time we used the same sort of commonsense when it comes to illegal immigration?

That’s why I am urging you to call and email your state lawmakers and ask them to support a package of four bills in the Mississippi Legislature. Contact them today and ask them to pass strong conference reports for SB 2114, SB 2322, HB 538 and SB 2828.

SB 2114 is focused on empowering local law enforcement to use longstanding federal resources, like the 287(g) program, to remove criminal illegal aliens. We are talking about drug dealers, human traffickers and murderers. This program was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Yet Mississippi has never taken advantage of it. It’s time for us to join our neighbors who are using 287(g) to get training and funding to local law enforcement. SB 2828 is a very effective tool to keep Mississippi communities safe from violent offenders and sex offenders.

SB 2322 is another great bill. It prohibits fake driver’s licenses from being used on Mississippi roadways. We have all heard of the horrible accidents being caused by illegal alien drivers with no training. SB 2322 helps address this problem.

HB 538 strengthens Mississippi’s currently very weak sanctuary city ban. Sanctuary cities (think: Jackson) refuse to cooperate with reasonable federal immigration requests – like requiring a person to show up in court. These localities are directly undermining the legal system. We need to pass HB 538 to stop this.

Finally, SB 2828 is about making illegal aliens pay their fair share. It addresses the problem of tax evasion by illegal aliens who are not paying state income taxes. Modeled after existing federal law, it implements a fee on international wire transfers. If an individual actually pays state income taxes, the fee is reimbursed.

These four bills work in tandem. Call and email your Mississippi lawmakers – and Speaker Jason White and Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann – and urge them to pass these four bills.

House Speaker Jason White: 601.359.3300
