Did you know that various Obamacare plans cover the costs of an abortion? Yes, you read that correctly.

Yet for years, loopholes and administrative rules have allowed abortion coverage to slip into Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, undermining the Hyde Amendment’s intent to protect taxpayers from subsidizing abortion.

Millions of Americans are unknowingly paying into plans that include abortion coverage or subsidies that indirectly support the abortion industry. In October, AFA Action joined a coalition of pro-life organizations calling on Congress to make Hyde protections permanent and unmistakable across the entire ACA. Now, it’s time to hold them accountable to do exactly that.

Congress must act. Every federal healthcare dollar – every plan, premium, and subsidy – should be 100% abortion-free. No gimmicks. No hidden coverage. No taxpayer dollars used to subsidize the killing of innocent children.

The following are just a few specific ways that this must be addressed.

Codify Hyde-consistent protections across the ACA so that no plan, subsidy, fee, or mandate can include abortion in any form or fashion;
Ensure HHS cannot authorize, approve, or maintain any ACA plan – including previously approved or grandfathered plans – that provides for abortion coverage in any form; and
Ensure full enforcement and accountability so that every taxpayer dollar is protected from being used for abortion.
