U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is holding fast to his promise to stop a Department of Defense (DoD) policy that authorizes taxpayer dollars to fund abortions for military personnel and their dependents. The recently-instituted DoD policy pays travel and grants paid time off for those seeking an elective abortion.
Sen. Tuberville says, “Federal law only allows the military to provide abortions in very narrow circumstances: rape, incest, and threat to the life of the mother. Yet, the Biden administration has turned the DoD into an abortion travel agency. They did it using a memo. The Biden administration wants abortion on demand for not just those enlisted in our military, but their family members as well.”
As a result of the policy, Sen. Tuberville has pledged to hold up the confirmation of Department of Defense general and flag officer nominees brought before the Senate until the policy is reversed.
Despite the opposition from the White House, Biden’s Pentagon brass, and Senate Democrats, more than 5,000 veterans are backing Sen. Tuberville’s position.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), signed by thousands of “current and former service members of the United States Military, and organizations which support our service members,” the veterans declare that they “firmly support Senator Tuberville’s position of holding civilian, general, and flag officers from confirmation by unanimous consent until the DoD rescinds its recently instituted policy of subsidizing abortion.”
According to LiveNews.com, House Republicans have successfully added an amendment to a $886 billion National Defense Authorization Act spending bill to block the policy. The bill now goes to the Senate, where Democrats strongly oppose the pro-life provision and will surely attack Sen. Tuberville.
