Over the last several years, I have taught many students from around the country, and a real problem has become apparent to me. I discovered a great war exists between the Kingdom of God and the devil regarding the raising of children to serve and love their Creator God.
While on a recent trip to the east coast, I had the opportunity to see places of great historical importance, especially our founding and building as a nation. As we begin to study American history for ourselves, we experience a great many problems. This is especially true concerning relevancy, that is, how does our past connect with anything today?
When you begin to understand a little about the significance of our past, and begin teaching students for yourself, this problem becomes extremely personal. This is because you attempt to show students the important connections of our Founding Fathers’ faith in the Creator God and our success in our War of Independence and the writing of the Constitution that guides our great nation.
When I went through U.S. history during my high school years, regretfully, I retained very little of the content of my class. There was never an application given in U.S. history as to why I needed it. Outside of the normal explanation that because I am a U.S. citizen and born in this country, I needed to become familiar with my country’s history.
Of course, growing up going to public schools, there was never a mention of the fact that our Founding Fathers believed in God, and were convinced Christians. Without that overarching theme and driving force for the foundation of this nation, U.S. history is boring. In recent years, I began to see the supreme importance of our Founder’s faith, and now understand that it was this faith that drove them to found this great nation. I had an “Ah Ha” moment.
To stand in Independence Hall where our Founding Fathers signed their names to the document putting their lives on the line for what they believed, precisely that Christ is the giver of liberty and true freedom, I became aware of their sacrifice. When one stands in those places and understands it was not foundationally about taxes and land ownership but about a uniting conviction to God and His Word that brought these men to that point in history, the relevancy of history becomes obvious. When we understand history in this context, it comes alive.
When my family and I stood below Little Round Top in the Devil’s Den battlefield at Gettysburg we reviewed pictures taken after that battle. What a price for the freedom of people to be free as the Lord intended in this nation! To later stand in the cemetery where President Lincoln gave the memorable address and see all the grave stones of the known and unknown soldiers was moving, “…that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom…” Many families sacrificed fathers, sons and in some cases on opposing sides no less. All for the understanding that States have rights, but they will never supercede the God given rights that all men are created equal.
I urge every mother and father reading this blog to review what you know about our country’s history. The revisionist agenda in our nation is wiping out the Biblical foundation of this country. It is our God-given responsibility and command to raise our children in the understanding of who they are, not only from a Biblical frame of reference, but in the course of history as well. We must make every effort to educate our children about the true Founding Era of America and the great battles of sacrifice along the way in history.
If our children are only exposed to our Nation’s history in school, and we never take them to these eminent places, and walk them among the hallowed grounds where our Forefathers lost their lives for this country and for their God, we may lose this mighty nation. Our children do not have much interest in history because they do not see it as being important to them today, or for their future. As our children become Christians, they must understand God’s hand in this country or we will have no one to carry on the battle for the faith that established this country.
